Former               senator               and               presidential               candidate               John               Edwards               was               indicted               Friday               on               six               counts,               including               making               false               statements,               conspiracy               and               receiving               illegal               campaign               contributions.

The               Washington               Post               reports               the               indictment               was               the               result               of               Edwards               allegedly               using               $925,000               in               campaign               donations               he               received               from               two               wealthy               contributors               in               order               to               cover               up               an               affair               with               his               mistress,               Rielle               Hunter,               whom               he               had               also               impregnated.

Edwards'               attempts               to               conceal               his               indiscretion               in               order               to               protect               his               2008               presidential               campaign               even               included               one               of               his               former               campaign               staffers,               Andrew               Young,               publicly               claiming               to               be               the               father               of               Hunter's               child.

In               the               end,               the               scheme               unraveled               and               Edwards               admitted               to               his               wrongdoing.

While               Edwards               did               display               a               special               level               of               character               defect               by               cheating               on               his               wife               Elizabeth,               who               has               since               passed               away               from               the               cancer               she               was               battling               while               Edwards               was               having               his               affair,               there               are               plenty               of               other               politicians               who               have               violated               campaign               finance               laws.
               Tom               Delay,               the               former               House               Majority               leader,               was               convicted               in               November               of               2010               of               money               laundering               related               to               his               efforts               to               funnel               donations               made               to               him               by               corporations               to               candidates               running               for               the               Texas               State               Legislature,               according               to               the               New               York               Times.

This               was               in               violation               of               Texas               campaign               law.

Delay               had               spent               the               last               five               years               fighting               the               charges,               which               led               the               man               known               as               "The               Hammer"               to               have               to               resign               from               Congress               back               in               2006,               when               he               was               arguably               one               of               the               most               powerful               men               in               government.

Delay               was               sentenced               to               three               years               in               prison               on               one               charge               and               10               years               community               service               on               another.

He               is               currently               appealing               the               verdict.
               In               1996,               the               Clinton               administration               was               the               focus               of               an               extensive               investigation               in               regards               to               a               possible               attempt               by               China               to               influence               the               1996               election.

While               investigations               did               uncover               that               the               Democratic               National               Committee               did               raise               millions               of               dollars               in               illegal               funds               and               there               were               serious               issues               related               to               improper               use               of               "soft               money,"               no               one               in               the               high               levels               of               the               administration               was               found               guilty               of               any               criminal               wrongdoing,               according               to               a               Washington               Post               special               report.
               Former               Illinois               Gov.

Rod               Blagojevich               is               probably               the               poster               child               for               campaign               finance               indiscretion.

He               infamously               was               caught               on               an               FBI               wiretap               saying               "I've               got               this               thing               and               it's               f---ing               golden"               and               "I               am               not               just               giving               it               up               for               nothing"               in               reference               to               the               open               Illinois               Senate               seat               vacated               by               President               Barack               Obama,               reports               MSNBC.

An               investigation               into               Blagojevich's               activities               uncovered               him               attempting               to               solicit               large               campaign               donations               for               the               Senate               seat.

He               also               attempted               to               receive               --               and               did               receive               --               large               campaign               donations               for               the               passage               of               certain               pieces               of               legislation               in               the               state,               according               to               the               St.

Louis               Post-Dispatch.

Blagojevich               proved               himself               to               be               a               prodigious               law               breaker,               racking               up               approximately               24               different               charges               related               to               corruption.

He               is               currently               being               re-tried               after               his               first               trial               ended               with               a               hung               jury               on               23               of               the               24               charges.
               There               are               currently               numerous               other               politicians               being               investigated               for               campaign               finance               violations,               so               Edwards               will               likely               only               be               the               junior               member               of               this               infamous               club               for               a               short               period               of               time.
