About 'sen. john mccain r-ariz'|Sen. John McCain wants J.D. Hayworth to reveal donors By DAN NOWICKI - The Arizona Republic
Sarah Palin's ignorance of world events is easy to see when she joyfully sends her eldest, son, Private 1st Class Track Palin, to war in Iraq. The issue isn't that her son has apparently chosen to go to Iraq; the issue is her failure to recognize why he is going. At a deployment ceremony on the seventh anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks, she told her son and his fellow troops that they would "be there to defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced from the death of thousands of Americans." She apparently does not know that claims that Iraq shared responsibility for the attacks with al-Qaida have been thoughtfully discredited and even rejected, although too late, by President George W. Bush. According to Ms. Palin, "You'll be there because America can never go back to that false sense of security that existed before Sept. 11, 2001," she said. "You will be there to win, you will see victory." Indeed, she has said that: "victory in Iraq is wholly in sight" and she continually criticizes Barack Obama for not using the word "victory". Both Sen. John McCain, R., Ariz., and Palin continue to claim success for the "surge of American reinforcements sent last year to Iraq. However, the facts are different. The US plans to keep about 138,000 more troops in Iraq than before the surge. Nonetheless, the best barometer of the lack of success from the surge is not the numbers nor even reduced deaths. Indeed, the true state of security in Iraq is the inability of the 4.7 million refugees, one in six of the population, who fled for their lives inside and outside Iraq, to return to their homes. While McCain and Palin engage in "happy-talk, the outgoing US commander, General David Petraeus, is far less optimistic about the American situation in Iraq. General Petraeus says that it (conflict) remains "fragile", recent security gains are "not irreversible" and "this is not the sort of struggle where you take a hill, plant the flag and go home to a victory parade... it's not a war with a simple slogan." There are two primary problems with "victory," in Iraq. First, declaring war on terrorism means you have declared war against a strategy, and one that the US engages in as well as others. In essence you have declared war against yourself. Obviously It does not make sense. You can declare war on a country, a group even an individual, but not on a strategy. War by its very definition requires a beginning, middle and achievable end. And that brings us to the second problem. There is no way to declare victory over an occupation of the middle-east landmass populated by a faith of people thousands of years older, and distinctly different from our own. Even the 6th century military strategist Sun Tzu new that: "Ground which forms the key to three contiguous states, so that he who occupies it first has most of the Empire at his command, is a ground of intersecting highways. On the ground of intersecting highways, join hands with your allies. And, Sun Tzu reminds us that: "If the campaign is protracted, the resources of the State will not be equal to the strain."
